Adult Issues Workshop Series

Each workshop features two sessions: one targeted to adults with autism, HFA, or
Aspergers; the other to parents and caregivers.

Agenda for each workshop:
8:30 - 9:00am - Registration, networking, breakfast
9:00 - 10:30am - Session 1
10:30 - 11:00am - break, networking
11:00am - 12:30pm - Session 2

attendance is required if registered. If a registrant misses one session, his or
her enrollment for any others may be forfeited and made available to an individual

September 11 - Employment

William Stillman, Author, Speaker, and Consultant
(session targeting adults on the Autism spectrum)
William Stillman, award-winning author, speaker, and consultant, offers parents,
caregivers, and self-advocates thoughts, wisdom, and advice to poise individuals
with autism for success in potential vocational opportunities.

Sherry Moyer, Author
(session targeting parents and caregivers)
Topics included will be using a strength based approach to identify potential job
placements, job sampling, building a functional portfolio, and strategies for improving
behavioral and social skills in the workplace.

October 30 - Housing

Joe Wykowski, Founder of Community Vision
Diane Dressler, Statewide Training Coordinator and Housing Specialist,
Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Developmental Disabilities Administration

(session targeting adults on the Autism spectrum)
Participants will learn about housing opportunities through the examples of the
presenters and persons with disabilities who have secured affordable, individualized
rental and home ownership opportunities within Maryland and other parts of the United
States.

(session targeting parents and caregivers)
Individuals experiencing a disability desire control of their hosing for the same
reasons other citizens choose to rent or own a home: safety, security, asset accumulation
and the opportunity of securing long term accessibility. Participants will acquire
knowledge of affordable, individualized rental and home ownership opportunities.

November 13 - Finance

Mary Turos, Founder, Confident Student
(session targeting adults on the Autism spectrum)
Effective financial planning and management is very important for adults living
independently. Mary will review bill organization and timely payment strategies,
budgeting, managing credit/debt, and long term investment issues. Financial success
can be achieved with overall organization improvements and by establishing new habits.

Diann Jones, Special Needs Financial Planner, Nationwide
(session targeting parents and caregivers)
Without proper planning, your child may lose entitlement to needs based benefits
such as Medicaid, Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and other government programs.
This workshop is intended to assist families through the complicated maze of special
planning techniques.

January 22 - Relationships

Peter Gerhardt, Director, Upper School, McCarton School
Zosia Zaks, Author and Advocate

Dr. Peter Gerhardt, director of the McCarton School and former president of the
Organization for Autism Research, and Zosia Zaks, a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor,
disability advocate, and autistic adult, will discuss "social life": how to minimize
loneliness; prevent isolation, improve friendships and dating skills, and bridge
communication gaps. Personal safety, sexuality, and parenting will also be discussed.
